one of the key players in the negotiations that formed the world of global economics after World WarⅡ.The Bretton Woods system of 1944 effectively pegged the currencies of most major nations to the U.S. dollar. The dollar was considered strong and stable and the denomination of gold. But
the Bretton Woods system collapsed in 1971: due to a combination of high oil prices

the dollar instantly plummeted. Against the Japanese yen it lost a quarter of its value in just under two years. Up to the present day it's weakened more than 70 percent.The dollar may have been cheap in the '70s
but authorities worried it had become too expensive by the '80s. The U.S.

France and Germany sighed the Plaza Accord in September 1985
agreeing to step in to weaken the greenback. February 1987
